What equipment will I need?
Whether it's skype piano lessons or FaceTime piano tuition, the following should be helpful.
Besides having access to a reasonable piano or digital keyboard, you will need 1) a good internet connection 2) a reasonable PC/laptop/MacBook/iPad etc with an audio connection and 3) ideally, a webcam.
You will need an app (eg zoom, skype, FaceTime, what's app etc) and one of these (eg FaceTime on an apple product) may already be installed on your device. Zoom is increasingly my preference: it is more reliable. Skype offers good instant recording (eg of a piano performance however short) which is instantly available to both pupil and teacher. These Skype recordings are not stunning quality but has proved useful. However Ive found Skype to produce unwanted feedback (build up of noise).
Two general comments: 1] during lessons other members of your household can help by not going online: depending on the quality of your internet connection, it can interfere with the quality of the lesson. 2] Keep the power cable plugged into your device: Skype/zoom etc are usually greedy on power: I've had quite a few lessons interrupted by the pupil's device running out of battery power.
Please note that when teaching children online I insist that a responsible adult is present in the room for the whole duration of the lesson. The younger the child, the more likely it is that an adult (not the child) would take a written record of work set for the following lesson.
