Music Theory
For more information about my theory tuition go to: musicandtheory.wix.com/musictheoryteacher.
Music theory, for most pupils, involves gathering an understanding of the basic symbols encountered in a printed piece of music.
For pupils who wish to go further, study may involve looking at how harmonies (chords) and melodies work together; considering key signatures, transposition, modulation etc.
I love to help people prepare for sitting a theory exam. I have never had a pupil fail a theory exam. My most recent entry was an adult who sat ABRSM grade 5 theory in 2015 and achieved distinction. ABRSM exam preparation is a speciality of mine.

Why bother with theory?
- It helps a pupil learn a piece more quickly.
- It helps the pupil to gradually become independent of the teacher; if you can fluently and accurately read music yourself you don't need the teacher so much.
- If you want to sit the ABRSM grade 6 practical, you need to pass the ABRSM grade 5 theory although that particular hurdle can be overcome by sitting ABRSM Practical Musicianship or Grade 5 Jazz piano.
- It seems logical to study music theory if you are composing; writing down accurately what you are imagining and hearing in your head seems a sensible thing to do!
